#0466  Silk Jacquard Shawl  c. 1840

Materials: Champagne colored silk, with silk floss fringe.

Provenance: New York state.

Condition: Near Perfect; a couple very small faint spots in the shawl, fringe perfect.

Measurements: 63" x 65"; Fringe L, 9".

Comments: A meandering border design (this one 10.25" deep) which doesn't extend into the shawl's center is typical of 1830s-1840s shawls. The figured weave of this border's design is rather unusual.  A honeycomb pattern makes up the background with a stylized pattern that seems to float over the shawl's surface. This is an exquisite garment - the color is sublime and the silk is luxurious to the touch.
