#1044  Riding Hat  c. 1870-1880

Black fur felt crown, black felt brim, satin and velvet ribbon band, paper crown lining, leather.

Label: Stamped in gold on paper lining: "Extra Quality  Bright Finish".

Condition: Excellent to perfect.

Measurements: 10" x 11.5" x 3.75".

Comments: In Mary Thomas' book, The Fair Lady Aside, she describes women's riding habits after 1860: "To complete the outfit, the lady wore a black felt flatted-topped, small-brimmed hat with...a veil caught at the front of the hat."  This riding hat no longer has its veil, but that detail is easily remedied. Rare!
