Materials: Bonnet: woven straw, chenille, stiffened buckram, velvet
ties, linings: silk taffeta and cotton mesh. Case: cardboard, tan linen, muslin
lining, leather straps with brass and nickel fittings.
Condition: The overall condition of both
the bonnet and the traveling case is excellent. Bonnet has some loose threads
over the ear areas; this suggests that originally there were some surface trims,
probably ribbon rosettes. Slight wear to the leather handle and to the outer
linen covering at each corner of the case. Also the muslin lining on the case is
soiled and several seams have come unstitched.
Measurements: Bonnet: 9" high x
7.5" wide. Case: 12.75" x 7" x 7.25".
Comments: Fantastic straw work on this
1860s spoon bonnet! First one inch strips of woven tan and dark brown straw were
stitched together. Next the straw was embroidered over with dark brown chenille
which in turn was decorated with straw in a delicate cross stitch pattern. It is
so rare to find such a wonderful spoon bonnet and its original coach case used
for traveling.
